Stand with Salman: Defend the Freedom to Write

August 19, 2022, 11:00 AM12:00 PM EDT

Free

Writers around the globe stand in solidarity with Salman Rushdie and celebrate his tireless advocacy for the freedom of expression and the plight of imperiled writers around the globe. Join PEN America, The New York Public Library, and Penguin Random House as we gather with friends, supporters, readers, and members of the literary community to read from selected texts from Rushdie’s body of work. Readers include: Paul Auster, Reginald Dwayne Betts, Tina Brown, Kiran Desai, Andrea Elliott, Amanda Foreman, A.M. Homes, Siri Hustvedt, Hari Kunzru, Colum McCann, Douglas Murray, Andrew Solomon, and Gay Talese. Other partners include House of Speakeasy.

This event will be livestreamed. More info coming soon.

Can’t be in Manhattan? You can still show your support by:

  • Hosting a public reading of Salman Rushdie’s work in your community.
  • Posting your own home video reading a quick passage of Rushdie’s work; make sure to use #StandWithSalman and tag us @penamerica.
  • Following our live coverage @PENamerica on Twitter.
