How to End Poems
January 10, 2021, 12:30 PM – 4:30 PM EST
Join Yale Younger Poet, Sean Singer, for this intensive seminar as he discusses how to end poems. Are poems’ endings a door or a window? The way a poem ends often confounds beginning writers; they don’t want to summarize, repeat themselves, or tie the poem with a neat bow. Some line endings have the power to remain in the memory, even longer than the poems as a whole. For example: “You must change your life” (Rilke); “I have wasted my life” (Wright); “Inns are not residences” (Moore). Endings can give a sense of a completed statement, ask questions, or be overwritten. This seminar will examine successful and unsuccessful ways of ending poems. Sean will prepare a packet of poems to help guide the discussion.
