Working for the University of Alberta Press

The Library & Museums portfolio seeks a dynamic and innovative Director and Publisher to provide intellectual, strategic, and operational leadership to the University of Alberta Press. The Press is a contemporary academic press that publishes up to 20 titles per year in both print and digital formats across a wide range of topics relevant to scholarship, research, and society.

Being the Director and Publisher of University of Alberta Press is a rare opportunity in scholarly publishing. Situated in a research-intensive university that offers strong institutional support, the experienced, creative, and cohesive publishing team produces award-winning books in both scholarly and literary arenas. The Press’s offices at the centre of campus are newly renovated and commodious. An adjoining event space connects the Press to units across the institution.

Candidates should be ambitious and bold, holding a vision for University of Alberta Press that builds on its reputation as a highly regarded publisher and accounts for the changes impacting academic publishing. The successful candidate can articulate a plan to enable the Press to continue to produce high-quality scholarship and to be a strong advocate for books, authors, and readers while leading the Press into an evolving future.

Reporting directly to the Vice-Provost (Library & Museums) and Chief Librarian, the Director and Publisher supports the mandate and mission of the Press by publishing important peer-reviewed scholarship, regional non-fiction, and creative works by Canadian and international authors; seeking and supporting development of scholarly work in broad and established fields as well as in specialized and emerging areas of research; extending the reach and influence of the University of Alberta by making evident the commitment to research, creativity, and the dissemination of knowledge.

Specific competencies we value and will consider include:

—Ability to develop and articulate a vision and strategy for the Press.

—Knowledge of emergent trends in academic publishing, e.g., AI, accessibility, inclusivity, sustainability, open access, open educational resources, and new editorial and production processes and technologies.

—Awareness of trends in scholarship and scholarly communication and a record of creating works that respond to these trends.

—Capacity to manage and lead people and teams.

—Business and financial acumen, particularly related to budgeting and planning.

—Awareness of the university press grant landscape and an ability to write successful grant applications.

—Adherence to high production values and editorial standards and technological currency in editorial and production processes.

—An entrepreneurial and creative mindset.

The ideal candidate will have a graduate degree as well as significant work experience in academic or commercial publishing.

The University of Alberta is one of Canada’s top universities. In addition to a university strategic plan, two other key plans shape the work we do. One is the Strategic Plan for EDI from 2019. More recently, the UofA created Braiding Past, Present, and Future: University of Alberta Indigenous Strategic Plan that seeks to “dismantle colonial structures in the university that have long disenfranchised Indigenous Peoples of their legal, social, cultural, religious and ethnic rights.” The Press advances these plans through its processes and its program.

The City of Edmonton is a welcoming city with vibrant communities and excellent schools. It is relatively affordable when compared with other major Canadian cities and has vast open spaces within the city in its river valley and ravines. While there are many tales of harsh winters, Edmonton has a very livable climate and is surrounded by a stunningly beautiful province. If you have questions about the community or university, please reach out to us.

At the University of Alberta, we are committed to creating an inclusive and accessible hiring process for all candidates. If you require accommodations to participate in the interview process, please let us know at the time of booking your interview and we will make every effort to accommodate your needs.

We thank all applicants for their interest; however, only those individuals selected for an interview will be contacted.

The University of Alberta is committed to an equitable, diverse, and inclusive workforce. We welcome applications from all qualified persons. We encourage women; First Nations, Métis and Inuit persons; members of visible minority groups; persons with disabilities; persons of any sexual orientation or gender identity and expression; and all those who may contribute to the further diversification of ideas and the University to apply.
