This is Poetry By Heart’s first year, during which the recitation competition is only open to students in years 10-13. The aim is to encourage young people to enjoy poetry at a time when their enjoyment is under the most pressure by the nature of exams. This can actually be beneficial to their learning, by giving them a firsthand and powerful experience of poems through memorising and reciting them, and/or listening to others do so. This will enhance their preparation for exams, offering a wider range of students a different way in to their sound, form and meaning.
