In this practical course with tutor Shazea Quraishi, the class will consider the poem as a flying machine and explore its inner-workings over three terms. Taking inspiration from poets past and present, the class will investigate the freedoms and challenges of free verse and traditional forms including the sonnet, terza rima, sestina, prose poem and experimental forms. As participants generate new poems and work on existing poems struggling to achieve lift-off, all will be encouraged to hone critical skills and enquire into one’s own poetics. Each term will include workshop sessions where the class will discuss new material produced along the way.
